Adventure Travel: Antarctica Destinations
Antarctica destinations are popular for those travelers who wish to experience the excitement of life at the very bottom reaches of the globe. Although known for its sub-zero temperatures are difficult transportation conditions, Antarctica has more to offer than some people think. The country is actually quite endowed with rather amenable weather, exotic wild animals, and unique topography.
Once you get past the sheer ice surrounding the continent, Antarctica has much to offer the intrepid traveler. Several kinds of boats travel to the continent regularly, including research vessels, so-called icebreakers, and expedition ships. Furthermore, there are many luxurious yachts and cruise boats that carry guests to the reaches of Antarctica year-round.
Antarctica Destinations on Land, and on Islands
Once the waters surrounding Antarctica have been crossed from either South America on the East or the Indian Ocean on the West, there is much to explore on the shores of the continent, or on one of its many islands. On land, one can easily view the thousands of penguins that populate its land, or the sea birds that frequent the shores. Many famous research locations are commemorated, including the journey made by Ernest Shackleton. Travel on land is often contingent upon the specific weather conditions at a given time.
Aside from the icy continent, the islands of Antarctica are also well-loved by travelers. The South Georgia Islands and Falklands, two of the most popular off-shore Antarctica destinations, are well-known for their unique geography and easier accessibility from all kinds of boats. Moreover, these islands present travelers with opportunities to see the many whales, seals, sea lions, and other forms of marine life that make their homes in the waters of Antarctica.
